The Editorial Production Manager plays a key role in executing AFAR’s editorial vision across all platforms by creating and maintaining production systems. The Editorial Production Manager ensures that work gets done and that the team functions smoothly.

Essential Functions

Manage the day-to-day workflow for both print and digital editorial teams.

  • Create strategy for meeting all production needs, including publishing digital content on time and on budget, meeting deadlines, fulfilling SEO obligations, and integrating print and digital
  • Work with Editor in Chief, Editorial Director, and Digital Content Director to manage staff workloads
  • Create and maintain tracking documents
  • Project and monitor budgets
  • Maintain yearly print production schedule and the art and edit deadlines for each issue, with input from key stakeholders
  • Manage digital editorial calendar
  • Help build articles when needed
  • Manage production of select digital guides and packages
  • Set and enforce print and digital creative team deadlines
  • Create and maintain measurement methods to ensure work is supporting company and department OKRs
  • Work with all members of editorial team to prioritize work and improve time management
  • Liaise with Pubworx production team to coordinate issues, schedules, maps, and other deliverables
  • Direct and manage contract editors, copy editors, proofreaders, and fact-checkers
  • Prepare InCopy editorial manuscript files for layout
  • Review proofs, do final quality control read before pre-media
  • Ensure editors send assignment letters to maintain quality standards and comply with legal needs
  • Process invoices for print and digital creative teams
  • Record meeting notes and schedule follow-up accordingly
  • Coordinate cross-department programs and new launches with other internal teams
  • Manage and maintain editorial team institutional memory—style guides, coverage archive documents, writer databases, writer guidelines—and train stakeholders on usage
  • Manage the reader survey process
  • Manage award entry process

The Editorial Production Manager should be a productive project manager with experience in managing copy flow and magazine and digital content production
