AFAR’s mission is to inspire and guide those who travel the world seeking to connect with its people, experience their culture, and understand their perspectives. AFAR is looking for a current college student or recent graduate, ideally someone passionate about travel and curious about the world, for a 10-month editorial fellowship in our San Francisco office. Top candidates will have entry-level journalism experience from prior internships or jobs, and the goal of pursuing travel writing or magazine journalism as a career. AFAR’s Editorial Fellow will gain hands-on experience in research, writing, reporting, and the production of an award-winning magazine that’s defining experiential travel. There are opportunities for bylines as well as opportunities to work closely with editors during the course of the fellowship.

Essential functions:

-Interview writers and photographers for the Contributors page
-Detailed research and fact checking for departments and features
-Write original articles for
-Assist in building articles on in editorial planning meetings.
-Contribute to AFAR’s social media presence
-Pitch story ideas and write short pieces for feature sidebars and Wander.
-Provide general administrative help (e.g. mailing magazines, organizing hotel databases, etc.)
-Opportunity to shadow and participate in various stages of the production process

Desired skillset and qualifications:

-A strong background in writing, research, and online publishing
-Outstanding written and verbal communication
-Prior international travel experience
-Strong understanding of social media
-Impeccable attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment
-10-month, 28-hour-a-week time commitment
-Curiosity, enthusiasm, confidence, and professional maturity
-A love for magazines and a passion for travel
-Strong sense of humor
