AFAR Media seeking an experienced, empathic product designer to join our team. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of design experience, a passion for travel, and is based in San Francisco. Preferences will be given to candidates who have worked in media or with editorial or storytelling products.  This role reports directly to the Director of Product.

Job responsibilities: 

  • Create wireframes, designs, specs, user flows, and process flows to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas and prepare designs for final hand-off to engineering
  • Create the visual design of our patterns and design system
  • Inform and participate in product decisions from definition to launch (and after), working at both a strategic and tactical level
  • Bring insights about users by a variety of methods whether it be surveys, interviews, log analysis, usability studies, diary studies, ethnographic observation, or a new method you invent
  • Use research and qualitative data to guide design and development decisions
  • Synthesize customer feedback to identify high impact features that achieve company goals + drive product direction
  • Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices and standards

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years experience working in product design and research
  • Strong background in design and usability principles and a human-centric approach to designing products
  • Experience leading a range of evaluative and generative methodologies both on-site and remote
  • Sound ability to scope, plan and execute each step of the research process from end to end
  • Foundational knowledge of information architecture, design principles and content strategy for both web and mobile
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills
  • Fluency in commonly used design software and related tools (Sketch or Figma, Zeplin, Adobe CS, etc.)
  • Comfort with the technologies for recording, analyzing, storing, and sharing research
  • An ability to work closely with engineers, translating design concepts and requirements into actionable and understandable elements to developers

  • Experience working with teams in remote offices and different time zones
  • Experience leading design sprint processes
  • Conceptual understanding of popular front-end frameworks like Angular and React
